"I found Falmouth Dentistry to be very professional practice that is easily forthcoming with information about one's condition. I met with their Sleep Coordinator, a very learned, astute, and friendly person who walked me through the entire process of fitting a mandibular advancement device in a comforting way... "

"My experience here was great, from the knowledgeable and professional staff to the efficient way everything was handled; first consulting about weather a dental device would be an appropriate replacement for my cpap machine, then with the digital scanning to create the mouthpiece. I highly recommend this practice. "

What Are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

There are a number of signs that can point to the fact that you have sleep apnea. Some of the most common include:

  • Excessive fatigue and daytime drowsiness
  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Waking up gasping for air
  • Waking in the morning with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Difficulty focusing during the day
  • Sudden mood changes

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

There’s no singular cause of obstructive sleep apnea. However, there are a number of risk factors that can increase your chances of experiencing symptoms. These include:

  • Age – sleep apnea risk increases with age
  • Family history – if anyone in your family has had sleep apnea, you’re at a higher risk of having it
  • Fat deposit around the neck – excessive fat deposits around the neck can cause airway obstruction
  • Smoking – smokers are more likely to have sleep apnea
  • Nasal congestion – if you have difficulty breathing through your nose regularly, your risk of sleep apnea may be higher

Can Sleep Apnea Cure Itself?

Sleep apnea doesn’t work itself out, which is why we recommend visiting a sleep physician or receiving a sleep study if you experience one or more of the above-listed symptoms of sleep apnea. Based on the results of your study, your physician may refer you to a specialist like Dr. Chadbourne for an oral appliance, or recommend that you use a CPAP device, which keeps the airway open by administering continuous airflow to prevent collapse.

How Do You Treat Sleep Apnea?

The first step towards addressing your sleep apnea symptoms is to schedule a consultation with a sleep physician near you. They’ll screen you for the condition as well as recommend either an at-home or laboratory sleep study. Then, based on your results, they may either recommend a CPAP device or refer you to our team at Maine Sleep Dentistry for an oral appliance if you aren’t a good candidate for CPAP therapy.
